Welcome to PipeReeds.com!

Over the last few years, I have put significant research and development into producing what I believe to be the finest bagpipe reeds available.

What I bring to this effort is significant competitive success at the highest levels of solo and band work, years of experience making and setting up reeds for solo and band situations, and the determination to do something markedly different—and better—than is currently available in the marketplace.

Please contact me with any questions you might have, or special needs that you'd like to explore. At the same time, please take the time to have a look around the web site. I have included some educational material here that will assist you to get the most from your MacLellan reeds.

About MacLellan Reeds

The new MacLellan reeds are manufactured using the most exacting standards employed anywhere. Before selection, each piece of premium French cane is hand selected and tested – any cane which does not meet minimum standards of colour and hardness is immediately rejected. Staples are made from folded copper [not the cheaper and brassier seamless], are airtight in construction and flawlessly symmetrical.

Our goal is to treat each customer and each band as individuals. Thus there is no such thing as a waiting stock of MacLellan reeds. Each order is custom tailored to the customer - the reeds are all tied in identically, and each order is finished and the reeds tuned to the customer’s personal specification.

Reed strengths come in strong, medium, and weak, and we will also supply a senior’s or beginner’s strength, guaranteed to be easily blown by any piper!  The finishing process used in making MacLellan reeds is far in excess of what is common in the reedmaking industry. Each reed comes individually stored in its own airtight, labelled container after having been tested three times in each of Naill, MacCallum, and Kron pipe chanters. Requests for testing in other makes of chanters are readily accepted.

In general, MacLellan reeds cost a little more than generic reeds which you can buy from dealers and piping shops. For a very small premium, however, the customer will get an individually hand-finished product and personalised service direct from the reedmaker. This will guarantee over the longer term to save money and time.

Colin MacLellan Reeds – guaranteed to play vibrantly in tune and at the strength you require!
